The Geneva Conventions are part of international humanitarian law. Humanitarian law protects those who are not, or are no longer, participating in armed conflict and sets restrictions on the weapons and methods that warring parties may use.

The first Geneva Convention was adopted in 1864 and concerns the protection of wounded and sick soldiers.

The second Geneva Convention was adopted in 1906. It concerns the protection of shipwrecked, sick, and wounded at sea.

The third Geneva Convention was adopted in 1929. It concerns the treatment of prisoners of war.

The fourth Geneva Convention was adopted in 1949 and concerns the protection of civilians in war.

At the same time as the fourth Geneva Convention was codified shortly after World War II, the three existing conventions were updated. Hence, today we refer to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949.

Since then, states have adopted three additional protocols.

Protocol I of 1977 concerning the protection of victims of international armed conflicts.

Protocol II of 1977 concerning the protection of victims of non-international armed conflicts. Protocol III of 2005 concerning the adoption of an additional protective emblem alongside the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
